Hand Up, not Handout

Today marks the first day of NGLA and I am so happy being with other Greeks not only at my school, but across the Northeast. Being able to network and talk with other fraternities/sororities across the country is an immense honor and privilege. Today, we were sitting in on the Opening Ceremony where we listened to a guest speaker named James T. Robo. He spoke about empowering others into leaders instead of followers and making sure we look at failures as a way of learning. Other then that, what really caught my eye was his discussion about how we should not be afraid of having those tough conversations with friends we call our own brothers and sisters. Other then empowering others into leaders instead of followers, this is the second most important thing because a lot of people who are in Greek organizations feel as if they will be hurting them. But, constructive criticism is important in developing and empowering people into leaders in our society.

So we, as fellow Greeks, need to start giving a hand up and make people accountable for their actions. Yes, I even make mistakes but what separates me from others is I learn from them and move on. I hope to gain valuable knowledge about different topics- from new Risk Management techniques to new recruitment ideas- and change the way Greek Life is perceived not only on campus but in our society as well.
